HOMELESSNESS  FOR VETS
AND FORECLOSED !
Editor,
It was a contrast that was hard to miss.  On
Sunday (3/30) The Indianapolis Star printed a
letter written by Ms. Anne W. saying that the rich
should not have to bear the retirement burden,
presumably of the poor. A letter by Mr. James W.
just above Ms W's complaint  sounded the same
note.  It wouldn't be "fair" Mr. W. said for a CEO
who is paid 7 million to have to pay $455,000 in
Social Security taxes. In contrast, yesterday's
Star said that panhandlers would be getting
"tough love" from the city.  Also by way of
contrast, yesterday's New York Times carried an
article about another young man, Eric H, (no
relation to the Star's Chris H.  As far as I know)
who suffered a severe episode of Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of his
service in Iraq, and became so frightened that he
crawled into a three foot wide storm drain and
died; His skeletal remains were found months
later.

I'm not faulting Ms. Winkler and Mr. Ward the for
their attitudes or their letters. They've been told
that this is "the American Way".  What's mine is
mine and, if I can get it, what's yours is mine too,
as evidenced by the regularity of CEOs who
send American jobs overseas or who have
bankrupted their companies only to resign with a
golden parachute worth far more than their
former workers could expect to earn in a
lifetime.

It is with good reason the French   refered to our
capitalism as "capitalisme sauvage" and went
into the streets in 2006 to prevent their leaders
from introducing it into the French economy.
"Capitalisme sauvage" means exactly what it
sounds like.  We show our capitalism to be
savage with every homeless person --
especially veterans of our wars --and
unsuspecting working people whose "American
Dream" of home ownership has turned  into a
nightmare as they  camp out under a railroad
bridge on the near southside of Indianapolis or
on the streets downtown. Tough love, huh?
They know tough love well!
